Spaces for artists to live and work in the Seaport District in Boston have become unrealistically expensive and restrictively small. Therefore, a new prototype for live/work arises—one that is cheap, by including modular prefabricated housing; allows work at a nearly unlimited scale, by incorporating industrial infrastructure for the production of art; and encourages collaboration, since the very form of the complex is always changing.
The living component of the project is made up of a structural and utility framework into which modular apartments plug in. The working component is comprised of two warehouse-style work spaces which house heavy machinery and shop facilities including a forge, wood shop, and milling equipment. The apartment module is also adapted into a pop-up gallery spaces, cafes, stair blocks and art storage, adn can be reconfigured to create a dynamic threshold for the public. Unifying these disparate entities is a telescopic crane atop the residential tower, always in motion, shifting living modules or carrying galleries or lowering material into work spaces.
